Audi Quattro a Piece of History

This Audi Quattro was the first rally car to use a four-wheel drive system and it completely revolutionized the sport.

Audi Quattro competitive debut took place at the 1981 Janner Rally in Austria, where driver Franz Wittman won every one of the 31 stages seizing victory by more than 20 minutes.

The world took notice and at its debut at the World Rally Championship in Monte Carlo a few weeks later, Hannu Mikkola was almost 6 minutes ahead prior to retiring. This demonstrated it was only a matter of time before the big wins would materialise and later that year Audi went on to win their first World Championship Manufacturer’s title.

By 1983 the Quattro was modified to Group B regulations. The A1 was the first incarnation followed shortly by the A2, which granted Hannu Mikkola Audi’s first Driver’s Championship.

In 1984 Audi introduced the Quattro S1. With increased power and lighter in weight, Audi dominated and in a double win took both the Driver’s and Manufacturer’s World Championships.

The final evolution of the Quattro was the formidable S1E2 introduced in 1985. It is regarded as the most powerful rally car ever fielded in international competition, with the final factory machines of 1986 rated as 591 bhp and is considered by Walter Rohrl as the “most mind blowing car” of his rally carreer.

This Car

This car was driven by Walter Rohrl on the 1985 RAC Rally with co-driver Phil Short, but unfortunately failed to finish due to a tather large accident. After it was rebuild, it became the test car for the PDK twin cluctch gearbox and Audi UK acquired the car in the late ’90s.

Weighing only 1090 kg, it can accelerate from 0 – 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds.
